These slides have been assembled to provide an OpenView Strategy & Solutions presentation framework. It is unlikely that you will use all these slides in one presentation. Further, you will likely need to draw on product specific presentations to address particular needs of your customers. (A few product slides are included and can be substituted with other slides if appropriate to your audience. Please access the various Hotlines for other OpenView product presentations. With an intentional emphasis on promoting what we can deliver, future product details are limited.) OVS01.GAL HP OpenView is your solution to maximize the benefits of your deployment of open systems. OVS02.GAL Three groups of people are interested in the deployment and use of open systems: those that build the systems, those that use the systems and those that are responsible for managing the systems. This presentation focuses on the needs and solutions for those people that are managing the systems. OVS03.GAL The OpenView overview provides a quick look at OpenView before diving into the details of the problem and the solutions. Next we will look at the needs we see in the user community, both for today's systems and for the systems that are being planned for the future. In response to those needs, the vendor community has taken a number of positive steps forward, consistent with, and in some cases driven by the OpenView program. We will close with a look at the award winning OpenView solutions that are available to solve real problems today. OVS03A.GAL HP OpenView is a family of integrated products and services that are pulled together through a common understanding of customer needs. We've a great deal of attention to building solutions on a common framework in order to provide maximum productivity gains to users of these solutions. OVS03B.GAL The scope of network and system management is immense. It covers a range of management functions applied to a large number of elements from many different vendors. In addition, users with a variety of responsibilities will need access to this management information, often in formats that vary with job function. This management information is required throughout the planning, implementation and operations lifecycle of the network. OVS03C.GAL Many individuals and groups concerned about this problem began to pull together to work on these problems. This excerpt from the Open Software Foundation's document on the Distributed Management Environment gives a summary of the problem. OVS03D.GAL In response to issues our customers face, HP has formed the OpenVIew program. Our mission is to be the world's leading supplier of integrated solutions to managers of open systems environments. These products and services will be delivered at a competitive price and increase their service levels provided to users while controlling costs. You can think of OpenView as the Microsoft of the Network and System management business. OVS03E.GAL Unlike most programs from other companies, HP OpenView is measured and managed as an independent software business, increasing our focus on providing key differentiating value through a disciplined execution of a solid business plan. We have outlined a three phase plan to achieve the business goals we've set for ourselves. First, we established leadership with our architecture and technologies. We invested a significant amount of time in developing and delivering the OpenView architecture. We pioneered such inventions as Auto Discovery (automatic and dynamic discovery of the entire network) and Auto Layout (a rule-based process that understands the rules of TCP/IP networks and presents maps of the network according to these rules). In the second phase, we delivered our products through key channels to achieve industry-wide acceptance. We developed relationships with key strategic adopters of our architecture and software environment. These include companies and organizations such as IBM, NET, OSF, X/Open and the NM Forum. Of course, technology by itself is uninteresting if it doesn't solve customer problems. To this end, we have worked with many large end users and now have OpenView installed managing over 6000 networks around the world. We continue to see accelerating growth in the number of OpenView partners and solutions deployed around the world. We are now focusing on continuted development and delivery of solutions. The network and systems management market is becoming more mature as users need to maximize the value of their network and systems investment while maintaining a focus on their business, A variety of channels, including HP's direct sales force and Professional Services Organization, develop and deliver OpenView solutions. OVS03F.GAL As a clear endorsement of our market position, CommunicationsWeek reported in September 1991, that HP OpenView has already become the leading supplier of open management solutions based on the pervasive SNMP standard. OVS04.GAL Now let's look at the user needs that are driving our investment decisions for OpenView solutions. We hear our customers, around the world, ask for powerful tools that will allow them to achieve better control of resources, improve service levels and reduce their overall operating costs. OVS05.GAL Let's look at what users are saying to researchers in the industry. OVS06A.GAL OVS06B.GAL OVS06C.GAL A research study conducted by Infonetics provided new insights into the costs that companies are enduring when their networks fail. Key points to note: Average cost of downtime is $30K/hr It takes 3.65 different people to repair problems OVS07.GAL Industry Response Integration of systems can reduce the number of people required to solve individual problems by providing the end-to-end information needed by managers. Two key organizations, X/Open and OSF have pioneered agreements that will lead to the delivery of integrated management systems. OVS08.GAL X/Open established a group to specify a set of APIs for network and system management applications. Sun, DEC and HP/Groupe Bull submitted proposals. OVS09.GAL X/Open selected the Consolidated API that was submitted by HP and Groupe Bull. This API is a result of the OpenView API for management applications extended through cooperative efforts with Groupe Bull. OVS10.GAL The Open Software Foundation chose technology that would manage OSF and other systems and network technologies within customer domains. OVS11.GAL By choosing an open development environment as a standard platform for network and system management applications, the OSF will encourage new solutions from a variety of developers. By leveraging a standard management framework, application developers can focus on their unique value added and provide users with a rich choice of integrated solutions. OVS12.GAL HP products and technology were selected as the basis of the OSF DME. (The decision was essentially between HP OpenView and DEC's EMA; no part of DEC's submittal was accepted by OSF.) OVS13.GAL The OSF chose portions of three HP products, the OpenView NM Server, HP Network License System (NetLS) and HP Software Distribution Utilities (SDU). OVS14.GAL The HP OpenView approach to managing open systems has been widely recognized by standards organizations, industry consortia and users. OVS15.GAL The OpenView solution model describes the components that HP integrates to deliver a complete solution. Only HP has the breadth and depth of products, industry experience and acceptance and the combined understanding of technologies such as management frameworks and test equipment. OVS15A.GAL As a the supplier of the industry standard management framework, we will also build on top of this framework and deliver solutions that address critical user productivity issues. By delivering these building blocks to other developers on multiple hardware platforms, HP OpenView customers will continue to have the best choice of management solutions from HP and our partners. OVS16.GAL Because much of the OSF DME is based on current HP products, HP OpenView customers will benefit with the earliest possible access to DME technology. Our first phase involves early delivery of OSF DME technology to application developers together with our robust TCP/IP manager (the OV Network Node Mgr), As we integrate additional OSF DME technology components into the OpenView family, OpenView customers will benefit from the best management solutions continuously integrated with the latest applicable technology in such a way that provides maximum protection of today's investment, not only in products, but also in training and the establishment of operations procedures. By basing our past, present and future products on the same foundation that OSF and X/Open have chosen, HP is now the only company that is so strongly positioned to deliver on the promise of being the fastest path to DME. OVS17.GAL HP has been "walking the talk" when it comes to open systems. HP's approach has been to manage the customer environment, not just the HP components. To actually deliver on this open systems promise, OpenView software is available from HP on HP and Sun hardware and from IBM as AIX NetView/6000. OVS18.GAL To summarize our current position, HP OpenView has been selected by IBM, OSF, X/Open and a large number of application developers as their management framework of choice. This strong momentum behind OpenView continues to increase the pervasiveness of our framework and provides OpenView users significant cost savings in the deployment of the integrated management systems. OVS19.GAL HP continues to pursue a multiple platform strategy to meet the multiple price points, channel preferences and operating system preferences of our customers. OVS19A.GAL HP's OpenView architecture as delivered by the OpenView Network Management Server. OVS20.GAL Solutions, built on the industry leading management framework are what really solve customer problems. OVS21.GAL HP offers a variety of products developed by HP. OVS21A.GAL & OVS21B.GAL These are the names of HP network and system management products. OVS22.GAL The list of products from HP OpenView partners continues to grow at a tremendous rate. The HP OpenView Solutions Catalog summarizes the key capabilities of these solutions. OVS23.GAL One such OpenView solution is the HP OpenView Network Node Manager. The HP OpenView Network Node Manager is an end-user solution manage multivendor TCP/IP networks on a site or campus. Using OpenView Network Node Manager, network administrators can understand the health of their network at a glance.
